National Peace Corps Week: “Around the World” Special Event!

National Peace Corps Week for 2015 is March 1-7, and here at UT we’rNicaragua flicker 2e planning a Peace Corps Around the World special event to mark the occasion.  It’s a cultural fair and reception, where RPCVs will be stationed at tables representing their countries/regions and will act as representatives to talk to potential applicants & interested members of the community.

We hope you can join us!

What: Peace Corps Around The World – Special Event
When: Thur March 5th, set up from 5:00-6:00 PM, event is 6:00-7:30 PM
Where: UT Austin International Office, 2400 Nueces (corner of 24th & Nueces, 1 block west of campus)
Why: To celebrate National Peace Corps Week and to share our experiences with potential applicants in a reception-style setting.
How: We at UT will provide the tables, either by specific country or perhaps grouped by region, ie “Caribbean Corner.”  You the RPCVs will bring (from your Peace Corps country):

  • Pictures from your service (either in albums or you can bring copies to put on display boards that we’ll provide)
  • Artifacts
  • Food/snacks (not obligatory but would be nice if you wanted to make something that you used to eat during service; we’ll also be providing pizza)
  • Clothing/outfits – if you can still fit into them (I know I can’t), even better, wear it!!  The flashier the better!
  • Music – if you have a CD with music from your country, or, if you can email me any mp3 files, I’ll put it on our music play list.
  • Your best memories, stories, advice, and enthusiasm for the next generation of Peace Corps!
RSVP: If you’re an Austin RPCV & you’d like to participate at one of the tables, please let me (I’m Kristi Stillwell, the UT Austin Peace Corps Recruiter) know by Thur 2/19/15:  I need your name, names of any other RPCVs participating with you (ie: a spouse that served with you in PC), dates of service, and country of service.  Send this info to peacecorps@austin.utexas.edu or give me a call at 512-232-9436.  If a group of you from the same country want to represent your table together, that’s great too.

You need to be able to please arrive as close to 5:00 PM as possible in order to get your table set up in time for the event at 6:00, and you should build in plenty of time for parking; I can’t pay for your parking, but there is garage parking adjacent on our same street as well as street meter parking that I believe is free after 5:00 PM.

I’m hoping for a good variety of countries, dates of service, and program assignments.  Just a heads up though, our space is not unlimited; I’ll probably only have space for 10-15 countries/regions, so first come first served!  I’ll be there the whole time of course to answer specific recruitment/application questions if they pop up.  Thank you in advance for what I think will be a great event, and please let me know if you have questions!

(If you’re an Austin RPCV but don’t want to host one of the tables, you’re still welcome to join us and just meet some of your fellow RPCVs & help tell those memorable Peace Corps stories to potential applicants, come on over!)
